I'm Emily Eggers
I have been a Middle School Language Arts teacher for the past 8 years at a hybrid school in Minnesota!
When the pandemic hit, my school, which had been doing online learning for years already, was all set to deal with the year of online learning. We actually saw an increase in work completion and attendance during this time.
I also saw other teachers truly struggling. I knew I had to help, which is how Teaching from the Couch was born!
I know what it feels like to want work crazy long hours and still not feel on top of it all. I was there just a few years ago....
Just like you, I wanted to succeed.
My background in technology has allowed me to implement systems and strategies to make my life easier in my classroom.
I used to get to work at 6 or 6:30am and stay until 5pm or later. Way beyond my contract hours.
And I was still working in the evenings and on weekends at home.
But then I had kids of my own, and I realized this just wasn't the life I wanted to be living.
Who would have thought...
Now, I get to work at 8am and leave at 4pm (which are the times I am required to be in the building)
I am leaving my computer and papers at school each day. I can come home and enjoy dinner with my family every night.
IT'S MY BELIEF THAT
Just because it's the way things have always been done, doesn't mean it should continue being done that way!
Teachers deserve the same work/life balance that any other profession gets and is encouraged to have. This idea of a teacher who gives their everything to their students is outdated and unrealistic, and it's just not how it needs to be.
